Remaining at home is your priority, and we want to make it possible for you. Our services are designed to keep you in the home you love on your terms by maintaining it and keeping you safe.

Home Safety for Seniors – Statistics and Solutions

Maintaining a home for an elderly family member is a big responsibility. We take the weight off your shoulders by providing home maintenance and safety for your loved ones. It all starts with our Senior Home Safety Assessment.

It's great that you're ensuring your elderly family member's home is safe. A Senior Home Safety Assessment is a great way to start. This assessment will help you identify potential hazards in your loved one's home and recommend ways to make it safer.

Here are some of the things that a Senior Home Safety Assessment might cover:

  • Fall hazards include loose rugs, uneven flooring, and poor lighting.
  • Fire hazards: This includes things like faulty electrical wiring, flammable materials, and blocked exits.
  • Medication safety includes ensuring medications are appropriately labeled and stored and your loved one knows how to take them safely.
  • Mobility: This includes ensuring grab bars in the bathroom and shower and that the home is accessible for a wheelchair or walker.
  • Cognitive decline: This includes ensuring there are no safety hazards in the home that someone with dementia or Alzheimer's could overlook.

Once the assessment is complete, I will provide a report outlining the findings and recommendations. You can then use this report to make the necessary changes to your loved one's home to make it safer.

Here are some additional tips for keeping your elderly family member safe at home:

  • Install a medical alert system: This will allow your loved one to call for help if they fall or have another medical emergency.
  • Regular home inspections will help identify any new hazards that may have developed since the last assessment.
  • Ensure your loved one has plenty of light: This will help prevent falls and other accidents.
  • Keeping walkways and stairs clear of clutter will also help prevent falls.
  • Install handrails in the bathroom and shower: This will support your loved one when they get in and out of the tub or shower.
  • Use Trip Guard in the bathtub, shower, and tile floors: This will help prevent slips and falls.
  • Keep electrical cords out of the way: This will help to prevent tripping and falls.
  • Store medications safely: This will help to prevent accidental overdoses.
  • Ensure your loved one knows how to use the fire alarm and escape plan: This will help them get to safety in the event of a fire.

By taking these steps, you can help to keep your elderly family member safe and independent at home.

Aging in place is a personal decision. There is no right or wrong answer. The most important thing is to do what is best for you and your family.
